Kresby Měsíce od Galilea
Galileo Galilei nevynalezl dalekohled, ale byl jeden z prvních, kdo ho vlastnil a také vylepšil. Cílem jeho pozorování byla samozřejmě noční obloha. A tak již roku 1609 vznikly unikátní detailní kresby Měsíce. O rok později už vydal ucelenou knihu o pozorovaných vesmírných tělesech.
Holandský výrobce brýlí Hans Libbershey si nechal roku 1608 patentovat svůj prototyp dalekohledu. Prvním uživatelem se nedlouho poté stal i italský učenec Galileo Galilei, který původní dalekohled zdokonalil pro pozorování oblohy. Jeho teleskop promítal obraz na papír v tmavé krabičce, jak je vidět na vzdělávacím videu. V následujícím roce 1609 vypracoval velmi realistické náčrtky ze svého pozorování. Tyto kresby měsíce jsou nyní uloženy v Národní knihovně ve Florencii.
Galileo Galilei věnoval pozorování Měsíce hodně času. Své poznatky sjednotil do své průkopnické práce s názvem Sidereus Nuncius (Hvězdný posel), zveřejněné v latině v březnu roku 1610. V tomto díle podporoval Kopernikovu heliocentrickou teorii a doložil jí vlastními důkazy, pro které byl pak umístěn do domácího vězení roku 1633.
Ve svém pojednání popisuje a mapuje hornatý Měsíc a jeho krátery, Mléčnou dráhu, nezpočet hvězd a hvězdné mlhoviny. Obzvláště hrdý je na objev 4 měsíců obíhajících Jupiter. Svou knihu doplňuje dokonale realistickými kresbami.
Stejně jako mnoho učenců své doby, Galileo byl dokonalý malíř, jak jeho kresby nasvědčují. A musel být, kresba byla jediná forma ztvárnění tehdejšího světa.
